Park and Castle

40,000 guests visit our park annually

Every year, Gisselfeld receives more than 40,000 visitors, who all come to enjoy the old Renaissance castle, the beautiful castle park, and the surrounding natural gems.

The name Gisselfeld can be traced all the way back to the year 1370, but the red castle you see today was built between 1547 and 1575 by Peder Oxe, Denmark's powerful Lord High Steward. There have been garden layouts around the Castle ever since.

The current park is approximately 40 hectares and was laid out at the end of the 19th century by the famous English garden architect H. E. Millner. An English landscape garden enriched with beautiful oases and botanical rarities, it is an enchanting place for a stroll.

“If you are planning a party for a special occasion, Fiskemesterhuset in Slotsparken can be rented for smaller parties or a hunting lunch.”

Northern Europe's most beautiful park with botanical rarities

Ever since Peder Oxe built his manor house, Gisselfeld Monastery has been surrounded by parkland. These grounds have changed appearance several times in keeping with new trends in landscape architecture. The current park is designed as an English landscape garden and was laid out throughout the 1800s. The park is considered one of Northern Europe's most beautiful and contains many botanical rarities. The area is approximately 40 hectares, half of which is carp ponds. The first were established by Peder Oxe and are considered Denmark's first fish farms.

A trip to the park is a romantic journey right into nature. The garden's division with water and plateaus provides a varied landscape experience, influenced by the rich birdlife and the changing seasons. This very special atmosphere can be enjoyed in the season when the park – upon payment of an entrance fee – is open to the public. It is also possible to use the park for various events and/or wedding photography.

Please note: Outside of peak season, the Fisherman's House in the southern part of the Park closes 2 hours before the main entrance Petanque and perhaps a picnic… Guests in the Castle Park can rent a (or more) Petanque set from the Ticket Office at the main entrance. The game, which is very popular in France and Southern Europe, is also known as “boule” (the French word for ball). The great thing about the game is that all ages can participate. A path/area has been set aside at “Frokostlunden” (The Lunch Grove) for this purpose, where you can enjoy yourselves, possibly after a picnic in the same spot (benches are provided). The finest setting…

Every year, the Castle Park provides the setting for a wide range of events, including the Gisselfeld Christmas Market, which is our own, Open-Air Opera Gala together with Faxe Municipality, and the Lifestyle Fair in Slotsparken, organised by CHPevent.
