The forest estate covers 2350 hectares including lakes, bogs, meadows and roads – and functions as a traditional forestry operation with timber production, as well as significant production of Christmas trees and greenery. Certified forestry
In 2004, Gisselfeld Forest District was PEFC-certified – Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes Denmark.
This means that the forest is cultivated today in such a way that sustainability and traceability are part of the forest's objective. The certification also involves ongoing checks by external auditors. This is to ensure that these standards are adhered to.
Through certification, areas have been set aside in certain parts of the forest where the forest is largely left untouched to support high biodiversity. These areas have been specifically selected based on locations with significant natural values, for example, around lakes and watercourses.
