Gisselfeld Forest District

The forest area under Gisselfeld Monastery is privately owned and is by far the largest agricultural unit at Gisselfeld Monastery. Forestry is managed as traditional forestry with a large production of Christmas trees and decorative greenery.

In private woodlands, special rules apply to access, and visitors to the woodlands are requested to observe these.

Production of quality timber

Gisselfeld Skovdistrikt's overall objective is based on the production of quality timber, combined with forest maintenance that preserves and develops both the production and natural values.

The forest district's permanent staff currently consists of one forester and six permanent employees. In addition, a large number of casual labourers are hired each year during the Christmas tree and decorative greenery season, during which a total of 75,000 Christmas trees and 150 tonnes of decorative greenery are produced annually. The majority of the Christmas trees are exported and today constitute a significant part of Gisselfeld Forest District's business. Forest production also generates large quantities of wood chips, which are sold in full truckloads to heating plants and similar facilities. Gisselfeld Castle, the Home Farm and associated buildings are heated via wood chip boilers, for which the forests supply the necessary amount of fuel.
