Gisselfeld Forest District

The forest area under Gisselfeld Monastery is privately owned and is by far the largest agricultural unit at Gisselfeld Monastery. Forestry is managed as traditional forestry with a large production of Christmas trees and decorative greenery.

In private forests, special rules apply to access, and it is requested that these be observed by forest visitors.

Quality wood production

Gisselfeld Forest District's overall objective is based on the production of quality timber, combined with forest maintenance that preserves and develops both its productive and natural values.

The forest district's permanent staff currently consists of a forest manager and six permanent employees. In addition, a larger number of casual workers are hired annually during the Christmas tree and decorative greenery season, during which a total of 75,000 Christmas trees and 150 tonnes of decorative greenery are produced annually. The majority of the Christmas trees are exported and are today a significant part of Gisselfeld Forest District's business. The forest production also produces large quantities of wood chips, which are sold by the lorryload to heating plants and the like. Gisselfeld Manor, the Home Farm and associated buildings are heated by wood chip boilers, for which the forests supply the necessary amount of fuel.
